Hudson Hunslet HE 1944 'Sam'
2010 Overhaul
Nobody knows when HE1944 was last overhauled, but it was certainly over 40 years
ago,the plan is to restore
her to her 1939 conditiion, (as near as we can estimate), run her for a
year or so, and then work her as she would have been at the end of her
time with the Basingstoke Canal Society.
The overhaul began on August 22nd 2010. After a preliminary photshoot, (photo 1), we removed the bonnet, cleaned the fuel and oil filters whilst the first coat of de-greaser was applied, (photos 2 & 3). The next task was to clean the exhaust pipe and baffle, before wire-brushing and painting them.

On August 29th the cab roof was removed. This was quite a task, requiring
the use of the large gantry crane. Also removed were the 2 sandboxes. Next task was to
wire-brush one half of the outside of the cab, (photo 4), The sandboxes and the battery box were then rubbed down. Once the wire-brushing was
done, it was time for her the first coat of red-oxide.
